This competition gets down and dirty for a good cause.

The start was quick and clean Saturday Morning

Many of these runners would usually run a 5k in under 30 minutes, but this isn't your usual 5k.

"Not only the mud pit which is 75yards long, but we run 'em through part of the Roanoke River, against the current we take 'em up a big hill in the back, so it's a little more than just a 5k," says Organizer Mike Shepard.

3.1 miles might sound easy, but this course is a challenge for even the most experienced runner.

"It's intense. It's a lot harder than I thought it would be," says runner Mitchell Klockenbrink.

In addition to the miles and running, you've got crawl through a mud pit on your hands and knees.

The run benefits toys for tots and Camp Roanoke.
