Museum fundraiser chugs on
Campaign to get the 611 back on track started in June
A fundraising initiative is chugging along at a Roanoke museum.
In June, the Virginia Museum of Transportation announced its capital campaign to get the 611 back on the rails.
The museum is trying to raise 3-point-5 million dollars to restore the locomotive.
While, the executive director wouldn't say how much they've received, he tells WDBJ7 the campaign is going "really well" which donations from 49-different states and 12-different countries.
"You get a check and it's $5 from somebody saying, 'I don't have a lot of money but I want to get 611 running.' That's the kind of thing that tells you its got soul and feeling and a lot of this is from people who have never seen it run. They've just heard about it," explains Executive Director Bev Fitzpatrick.
The museum hopes to meet its goal at the end of October, but says it will continue the "Fire Up 611 Campaign" even if it hasn't by that time.
