NELSON COUNTY, Va. -

UPDATE:

A rally was held Friday to raise awareness about unsolved missing/murdered person cases and to ask the community to continue their support of those affected by these types of tragedies.

Members of the CUE Center for Missing Persons of North Carolina joined the family of missing Nelson County teen Alexis Murphy, the parents of Morgan Harrington, and community members in Lovingston for the rally.

Murphy disappeared August 3, and no one has seen her since.

Morgan Harrington disappeared in 2009, and police found her body a few months later in Albemarle County, but police haven't arrested her killer.

A map was displayed at the rally, highlighting a total of fourteen unsolved missing/murdered person cases since 2009.

The Harringtons said these are just the people that they know who are missing.

Gil Harrington urged increased education, a change in culture, and a change in laws to take care of what she described as lapses and loopholes that allow for things like this to occur.

"Once you know what it's like from the inside, you will move heaven and earth to help anybody else," Gil Harrington said.

Both families asked for continued support.

Alexis Murphy was captain of her volleyball team, and the team attended the event. Laura Murphy, Alexis's mother, was emotional as she gave each member of the volleyball team a hug as the rally wrapped up.

When asked what she would tell her community, Laura Murphy offered thanks to them for their great support.

"Without them I couldn't do it," Laura Murphy said.

Alexis Murphy's father, Travis Boyd, said that the Murphy family was just trying to stay strong.

"I'm just trying to keep strong. This is a day by day situation, that you have up and downs. I'm just trying to keep my faith," Boyd said.
