AMHERST COUNTY, Va. -

Investigators in Amherst County are looking for the man they say killed a mother of two in broad daylight.

Cordell Carter, 49, is accused of murdering 30-year-old Jennifer Johnson.

Investigators aren’t releasing many other details as to how Johnson was murdered, but her friends and neighbors are speaking out about the woman they once knew.

"I know when you see crime tape, it's not good," said next-door neighbor and close friend Tammy Martin.

Residents in the neighborhood said Tuesday was not your average day in Amherst County.

"All I heard was the sirens,” said neighbor Ann Ferguson. “We looked out the window and saw the police and rescue squad and tape and we knew something was going on."

Amherst County investigators say Carter killed Johnson Tuesday afternoon. The mother of two was found dead in her home located at 1773 S. Amherst Highway.

Friends remember Johnson as a loving and caring mother.

"She was a sweetheart,” said Martin. “She came over here and helped me a lot or she would just come over here and talk."

Ann Ferguson was Johnson's other neighbor. She often saw Johnson with her two sons at the school bus stop.

She said in the more than 20 years she's lived along the highway, she'd never imagine a crime like this could happen.

"I just feel like it's too close for comfort because you never hear of that in this neighborhood,” said Ferguson.

Johnson's body has been taken to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke.

Warrants have been issued for Cordell’s arrest.

Investigators said Cordell is 5’10” and weighs 210 pounds. He is believed to be armed and dangerous.

If you have any information about his whereabouts, contact police immediately.
