A temporary Park and Ride lot in Christiansburg will open Friday to replace the existing Park and Ride lot off Interstate 81 at exit 118.

The temporary lot is located off Roanoke Street across from Hubbell Drive.

It will open Friday for people who are not using bus services. On Monday, August 4, the Park and Ride lot near Falling Branch Elementary School will close and MegaBus and Smart Way bus services will begin using the new lot across from Hubbell Drive.

The temporary, 65-space lot, was put in place to alleviate safety concerns parents had about travelers trespassing onto school property to find restrooms and other amenities. It will be used until the permanent Park and Ride facility is developed.

Construction on the permanent facility will begin next summer. It will provide more than 200 parking spaces and will also be located off Roanoke Street across from Hubbell Drive.

Approximately $300,000 of the $5.8 million allocated for the Park and Ride project will be spent on the temporary lot.

The pavement at the old Park and Ride will be removed. The area will be restored to a green space.
