SALEM, Va. -

The numbers are impressive: close to 20 million pounds of food distributed in a year, and more than 23,000 people benefiting every week.

Those are statistics come from a new study by Feeding America Southwest Virginia.

The food bank based in Salem serves 26 counties and 9 cities in the region, and leaders say the local findings provide a snapshot of the people who need their help.

Pamela Irvine is the President and CEO of Feeding America Southwest Virginia. "The sad thing about all that information is that 77 percent of those families live at or below the poverty guidelines," Irvine told WDBJ7, "$10,000 a year. Think about that."

Feeding America Southwest Virginia supplies food to partner agencies that operate almost 400 feeding programs in our part of the state.
