ROANOKE,Va. -

October 1 is the first day to enroll for the online insurance marketplace under the Affordable Care Act.

Some people are visiting website Healthcare.gov. Others are depending on Health care groups to enroll. New Horizons Healthcare is helping people through the process.

A certified application counselor at New Horizons says they've received several phone calls from people wanting to know how to navigate through the process. She says everyone's situation is different and you'll find a checklist online of what you need.

"Typically the checklist is going to tell you need to have your social security number, you need to have an estimate of your income for your household and if you're eligible for employer based insurance, it’s going to ask you to bring a completed employer coverage tool form,” said Certified Application Counselor, Robin Davis.

If you want to get help from New Horizons you can call ahead to make an appointment.

Open enrollment started today and runs through March 31st. You could receive health coverage as soon as January 1st.

Under the ACA, all Americans must have insurance coverage starting in 2014 or face penalties of $95 or 1% of family income, whichever is greater.
