ROANOKE, Va. -

We're used to pediatricians prescribing medicine to kids.

Thanks to the national non-profit program,  Reach Out and Read, they're also prescribing books.

Carilion Pediatric Clinic is the first doctor's office in the Roanoke Valley to offer Reach Out and Read, which has a partnership with Smart Beginnings.

Since 2005, doctors there have given out about 30,000 books.

Children as young as six months old get a new age- appropriate book, while parents get some helpful tips on how to encourage a love of reading.

Carilion is always looking volunteer readers, along with donations of new or gently- used books.
