CHATHAM, Va. -

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's office is investigating a claim that a deputy was racist toward an inmate.

Sheriff Mike Taylor says an inmate says a deputy made a racially insensitive comment.

The sheriff says he immediately opened an internal investigation when he found out about it.

Sheriff Taylor says he doesn't condone or tolerate racist comments made by any member of his office.

"We have a very strict policy here on discrimination. Any discriminatory remarks against anyone. We have a very strict policy and a very strict guideline that we follow," Taylor said.

He says he will take action based on the facts from the investigation.

He wouldn't say if the inmate is still in jail. A community activist however says the inmate is now at home.

The local chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference is doing is own investigation.
