ROANOKE, Va. -

Some Roanoke City police officers took a break from their daily grind to get into one neighborhood.

Art with Cops was held at Landsdowne Park on Wednesday.

About a dozen kids got the chance to meet the very people who patrol their neighborhoods and keep them safe.

After eating lunch, police officers and the children made cards for people that are sick and in the hospital.

Officers said it's a great way to show the kids that they are people too.

"A lot of time the kids only get a perception of the police department from negative interactions, especially in this community, and we like to make sure they know we are here to help,” said Officer Susanna Camp. “They shouldn't be afraid of us.”

The police department plans to hold another art session later this summer.
