VINTON, Va. -

Summer time means your student will have a lot of free time on their hands.

Tonight, one group is trying to educate kids how to be responsible with that time.

There are several promising things; the main one being that alcohol use among high schoolers is trending down.

The county does a Youth Risk Behavior Survey every other year.

The percentage of high schoolers who say they've had a drink was over 70% in 2002, this past year that number's dropped to just under 60%.

But the concern comes with the perception of harm.

Two thirds of students in the county think alcohol is harmful.  Nancy Hans with the Prevention Council of the Roanoke County says tonight's town hall is an effort to move that number higher.

"What are mixed messages that we, as adults in the community send to our youth about alcohol?" is what Hans says is a critical question in making communities and kids safer.

The event starts tonight at 7 p.m. at the Vinton War Memorial.  Admission is free.
