SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. -

Officers with the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries reported a fairly quiet July 4th holiday on Smith Mountain Lake.  Water checkpoints will continue through the holiday weekend, however, as the weather improves.

Conservation Police Officers made three arrests of suspected drunken operators July 3rd and 4th.  Officers said the holiday was fairly tame, likely due to the weather.

Officers did charge an operator with reckless boating Thursday night.  The man's boat hit a shallow spot and ran into a grassy area above the bank.  Eight people were on the boat.  No one was hurt, however.  The crash happened in the Blackwater River section of the lake.
