The Roanoke Area Youth Substance Abuse Coalition or RAYSAC is dedicated to keeping youth drug free. Sunday, it held a special candlelight ceremony at The Hotel Roanoke to remember those affected by drugs and drug abuse.

It's all tied into the organization's Red Ribbon Campaign. The red ribbon symbolizes intolerance of illegal drug use and a commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.

This is the 18-th year for the event that aims to teach young people about the dangers of addiction. This year's theme was "A Healthy Me is Drug Free," reinforcing the campaign's mission.

"Increase awareness about the dangers about drugs and alcohol and really get the dialogue with students and their parents and talking about making healthy choices," Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare's Sheila Lythgoe told Your Hometown News Leader.

Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare was one of the event's major organizers.
