ROANOKE, Va. -

A shelter in place has been lifted at Westside Elementary School in Roanoke after shots were fired nearby Tuesday morning.

According to the Roanoke Police Department, someone in a vehicle fired shots at second vehicle near the intersection of Westside Boulevard and Hershberger Road. Westside Elementary School is off Hershberger Road.

Investigators are still searching for suspects. The shooting did not happen on school property.

Westside Elementary School enacted a shelter in place shortly after 11 a.m. Westside Elementary School is off Hershberger Road.

According to the Roanoke Police Department, someone reported that shots were fired at a car in transit near Westside Elementary School.

A shelter-in-place means that the school limits who is able to enter the building. Normal activity continues at the school, but students are not allowed to do any outdoor activities.
