ROANOKE, Va. -

Winter weather across the United States is hindering travel plans in Southwest Virginia.

The Roanoke Blacksburg Regional Airport saw delays and cancellations Friday thanks to larger airports along the east coast.

The winter storms grounded planes and even shut down airports in the north east.

Airports in Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Boston and Washington DC saw some of the biggest delays.

Airport officials in Roanoke said it could still be hours until everything is back on track in the air travel world.

"Once the flights get delayed at these larger airports that trickles down and you see delays in Charlotte, Atlanta other places like that so that's going to continue throughout today," said airport spokeswoman Amanda DeHaven.

DeHaven said it’s best for travelers to check online before heading to the airport.
