The City of Roanoke's police recruits jumped in feet first for training today.

Today was the first day the recruits got water training.  The water training program is relatively new.  This is only the fifth class of recruits to do it.

Trainers test recruits on their swimming ability.  They also teach them tactics for rescues.  Trainers teach recruits to avoid the water at all costs, but our rainy summer is a reminder that it's not always possible.

"Especially with the flooding that we've had over the past year, I feel like it's really focusing and honed in on don't jump in the water right away, what other options do we have?"said swim instructor and Roanoke City Police Officer Amanda Martin.

Pretty soon, the recruits will be jumping into the pool with weights on to mimic wearing a full uniform.
