ROANOKE, Va. -

Road crews in Roanoke say they were better prepared for the icy roads this week compared to last week.

They had to use a special salt for much of this morning because temperatures were so low.

"It was practice last week and simply, I think we were more prepared this week. Even though it was kind of a surprise. Our paid weather service had it on their radar screen so we had it on our radar screen," said Dwayne D'Ardenne with Roanoke City.

D'Ardenne says 95% of the roads and in Roanoke City are completely clear as of 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.

More broadly, the Virginia Department of Transportation says it's had a successful day of snow removal despite the sub-freezing temperatures.
