We've seen a lot of fires in the news; bigger cities across the United States have been reporting an increase in fire fatalities, reaching their yearly average in the first month or two of 2014.

Locally, we haven't seen fatality numbers spike, but still there have been quite a number of news worthy fires. So much that the local red cross chapter launched a special fund raising campaign just for victims of fires in the 50 county region they serve, called Hope is Fireproof. ;

From mid-October to the end of January the Red Cross had responded to 182 fires and assisted roughly 1,000 people in this area.

In Roanoke County in 2013, about 231 different kinds of fires and that's not including brush fires.
