SMYTH CO., Va. -

A Rural Retreat woman died in an accident Thursday morning in Smyth County.

The accident happened around 7:45 a.m. on Highway 11, less than a mile from Old Tannery Road. Carrie Stewart, 51, was killed.

Stewart’s 2003 PT Cruiser was headed south on Highway 11 when it crossed the center line and hit a Jaguar head-on, according to Virginia State Police. Stewart’s 7-year-old grandson was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. Both were wearing seat belts.

The driver of the Jaguar, Phillip Gullion, and his passenger, Elizabeth Gullion, were flown to a local hospital. Both were wearing seat belts.
