SALEM, Va. -

The Salem Red Sox have claimed the title of 2013 Carolina League Champions.

There was a lot of preparation and anticipation heading into Tuesday's big game.

"It's been kind of a funny year,” said fan Dean Reed. “A lot of rain outs. I thought tonight would be rained out, but it seemed to come out very nice."

The Salem Red Sox have had quite the season and it's got a lot of people already looking forward to the next season.

"It creates a lot of community pride and pride in the Valley and everyone loves a winner," said Salem Mayor Randy Foley.

Fans said it’s nice to be able to having a winning team in their own backyard.

"I appreciate the nice field we have out here,” said Reed. “It’s just a good atmosphere to come to the game here."

The Salem Red Sox won the same championship 12 years ago.

Most of the players are headed home as early as Wednesday.

Spring training starts in February and the players will be back in Salem in April.
