SALEM, Va. -

Both Salem and Roanoke Fire & EMS department’s swiftwater rescue teams have been awarded the Higgins & Langley Swiftwater Rescue Incident Award.

They were honored for rescuing more than 50 people in danger last July when severe flash flooding swept through the Roanoke Valley.

The teams rescued 21 children in a daycare center (click here to see the video), an injured motorist, a bedridden hospice patient, and other groups of citizens and individuals trapped inside vehicles and buildings.

Capt. Tim Graham, Lt. Mike Elston, Sr. Firefighter James Burke and firefighter Jason Morris received a certificate and award ribbon for their selfless actions in responding to the incidents.

The awards were presented June 6 at the National Association for Search and Rescue conference in Woodcliff Lake, N.J.
