HUDDLESTON, Va. -

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries continues its search for a man, who is believed to have drowned in Smith Mountain Lake over the weekend.

Sergeant Brian Young with the DGIF said John Shoop, a resident of Chesterfield County, was riding in a boat near Huddleston Friday afternoon when he apparently fell off the vessel and disappeared into the water. Shoop's family was riding in a nearby boat when the incident happened and called for help.

Dive teams searched for Shoop on Friday night and Saturday, but were unable to locate him in the water. A side-scan sonar was put in the water Sunday, but got caught in heavy brush and debris at the bottom of the lake.

Young said DGIF officials will continue to search the surface and shoreline of Smith Mountain Lake daily until Shoop is recovered.
