RADFORD, Va. -

People who live in several southwest Virginia counties are voting in a special election that will determine the balance of power in the state senate.

Voters in the 38th State Senate District will choose a replacement for Phil Puckett, who resigned in June.

That district includes Radford, Pulaski County, a small part of Montgomery County, and other communities.

The candidates are Republican Ben Chafin, Democrat Mike Hymes, and Independent Rick Mullins.
