Two George Wythe High School coaches have been suspended over accusations they severely punished a student athlete.
Virginia State Police is handling the investigation because the students involved are related to employees at the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office.
We're told that the alleged incident originated at a George Wythe-Fort Chiswell basketball game. An 11th-grade football player went to the Fort Chiswell cheering section and started rooting for Fort Chiswell.
Last week that football player was supposedly told to place chains around his neck, and then told to run up and down the bleachers while other student-athletes looked on. Child Protective Services is involved. The coaches involved in the incident have been suspended temporarily.
The Wythe County School Board says it does not discuss issues involving its personnel.
The school board held a regularly-scheduled meeting Thursday night.
No criminal charges have been placed at this time.
George Wythe’s football team won the state championship in 2012.
