ROANOKE, Va. -

Police have released the identity of the suspected robber who died from a gunshot wound he received in a shooting in a Roanoke neighborhood Thursday night.

Earnest Neal, Jr., 42, of Roanoke was found wounded at a nearby Shell Gas Station off of Hershberger Road after a shooting police believe started as an attempted home invasion robbery. It happened just before midnight Thursday on Ferncliff Avenue. He was pronounced dead later that night while being treated at a hospital.

Police say a person inside the home shot Neal in self-defense.

Police have not released the name of the person who fired the shots.

At this point in the investigation, police say no charges will be filed.

A resident shot and killed a suspected robber in a Roanoke neighborhood Thursday night.

City police say the shooting happened just before midnight Thursday on Ferncliff Avenue.   

Police believe the incident started as an attempted home invasion robbery.  Police say a person inside the home shot one of the would-be robbers in self defense.  The wounded person was found nearby at the Shell Gas Station off of Hershberger Road and died at a hospital.

Police have not released the names of the person killed or the person who fired the shots.

At this point in the investigation, police say no charges will be filed.
