The University of Virginia is working to keep the look and feel of campus just as Thomas Jefferson left it.
To help them determine what is original and what's not, they're using a research microscope.
"Anytime you go into a historic building and you start peeling it apart you want to know what's original and what's not and this tool can be very helpful in answering that type of question," said UVA Architectural Conservator, Mark Kutney.
A recent grant allowed the U-V-A Architect office to buy the microscope.
The new tool will help preservationists understand the exact materials and colors that were used long ago.
