UPDATE: Both lanes are open on I-81 North in Botetourt County. Drivers are asked to use caution when driving through the area.
A tractor-trailer carrying turkeys crashed early Tuesday morning.
The driver has been charged.
Steve Oliver, 48, of Pageland, South Carolina is charged with reckless driving. It is believed he may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
The right lane of Interstate 81 North in Botetourt County near mile marker 154 will remain closed until approximately 7 p.m. while crews continue clean up from a tractor-trailer accident.
The tractor-trailer was hauling around 2,500 turkeys. Crews on scene are still removing turkeys from the area.
As of 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, traffic was backed up around seven miles.
A tractor-trailer hauling an estimated 2,500 turkeys overturned on Interstate 81 North on Tuesday morning, causing major backups.
The accident happened in Botetourt County near Trinity Road around 4:30 a.m. A pick-up truck was also involved.
The northbound right lane is still closed while crews clean up. That's around mile marker 154. Traffic was backed up four miles as of 11 a.m.
There are no reported injuries.
A wrecker is on scene and crews are waiting for a second tractor trailer to arrive to remove the turkeys. They estimate the lane closure may be in place until noon. Some of the turkeys spilled onto the road.
The Virginia Department of Transportation isn't reporting any major delays.
