Police say the suspect's name is Sean Michael Lovelace.

He is 42.

A charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon is pending against him.


A man who fired shots from on top of a Roanoke motel on Wednesday evening is in custody.

No one was hurt in the incident. The suspect was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for an evaluation. Charges are pending.

Police got a report shortly after 5 p.m. about a man with weapons on top of the Starlite Motel on Melrose Avenue. When police got to the motel, they saw the suspect fire shots.

Melrose Avenue near Peters Creek Road was closed during the incident.


A manhunt is underway in Roanoke after a report of a shooting near the Starlite Motel on Melrose Avenue.

Roanoke police confirmed that shots were fired, but not by police. There are no reports of injuries at this time.

The Roanoke Police Department is asking people to avoid the area. There is an active search taking place for a suspect who may be armed with a rifle. Earlier, police officers blocked Melrose Avenue near Peters Creek Road.

A local business owner tells WDBJ7 that he heard a gunshot. Police told an employee at a business on Melrose Ave. to go inside because of an active shooter on a roof.

Traffic on Peters Creek Road is moving again.
