VINTON, Va. -

One hometown is making no "butts" about rolling back a recently adopted tax.

Tuesday night, the Vinton town council decreased its cigarette tax by 10-cents.

The town implemented a 35-cent a pack tax last year in an effort to grow its revenue.

But, Vinton merchants and the town's bottom line took a hit and found that customers didn't like the tax and traveled to nearby Roanoke City and County to avoid it.

"Certainly we want to be responsible, but we take pride in the fact that we can respond to our citizens. That's one of the advantages of being a small town -we heard what the merchants had to say and responded appropriately," explains Vinton Mayor Brad Grose.

The new tax starts Wednesday.
