LYNCHBURG, Va. -

Virginia drivers are being asked to trade in their car this week for another mode of transportation.

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation is hosting "Try Transit" week.  The event is designed to encourage more people to use mass transit.

Families are encouraged to swap one car trip this week for a ride on public transportation.  Anyone who participates can go online and register their ride for a chance to win prizes.

"By using public transportation you can save on money, fuel, and car expenses," said Natalie Wilkins, community relations manager for the Greater Lynchburg Transit Company (GLTC).  "It's also a good way to go to the store and medical appointments."

GLTC is offering riders the opportunity to win a fee month or year of rides on city buses.  Click here to participate in the contest.
