ROANOKE, Va. -

A study from the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute might have figured out how to solve addiction.

Warren Bickel is the director of Virginia Tech's Addiction Recovery Research Center for the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute.

The study isolates the most common factors for addiction and the best ways to overcome them.

The group studied a combination of people's short term memory and self-control abilities.

The study says people who struggle with addiction favor short-term satisfaction instead of long-term success.

"Many of the behaviors that we see that are challenging in addiction, may, in part, reflect their inability to see what happens downstream," Bickel said.

The study showed, the addicts who seem the most helpless had the best outcomes when paired with the right treatment.
