ROANOKE, Va. -

Virginia Western Community College is helping veterans put away their boots and pick up the books.

This Saturday marks the first Boots2Books 5k race. It starts at 9 a.m. near the new Student Life Center on campus.

Proceeds for the event go straight toward the Virginia Western Educational Foundation's Veteran Assistance Fund. This fund is an emergency resource for military members and veterans who need help buying books, school supplies and other basics. It also supports the mission of the Armed Forces Student Association.

"Despite the supports and funding available to veterans as they return to college and prepare for the workforce, many still find themselves needing help," said Matthew Jones, president of the Armed Forces Association. "As a veteran myself, I knew I wanted to do something about it. The support of Virginia Western and community partners to make this race a reality has been amazing."

The time for pre-registration has already passed, but runners can register the day of the race for $35.

The 5k race course will start on Virginia Western's campus. There will be and challenging climbs through the nearby Jefferson Hills neighborhood. Refreshments and entertainment will be at the finish line.
