Some Franklin County kids are riding the wave. For some it's their first time on the water at Smith Mountain Lake. The Christian based organization, Wake the World made this possible for kids who might not otherwise have the opportunity to be on the water at Crazy Horse Marina.
“It’s all about bring under privilege kids to the lake and treating them to some of the things we take advantage of in our lives,” said business owner Ken Hayes.
Kids range from elementary to high school age.
“It's very fun you get to play with all your friends. And you get to do lots [of] new things,” said Mehki Muse.
“It's pretty awesome because it's for free of course. You get to go tubing and you get to be in the water and it's a blast,” said Ashlee Hodges.
This is also a first for the commonwealth. The organization holds event all over the world. Nearly 20 boat owners gave their time and vessel's for the event.
“We've got to give back to the community at some point. And these kids live in Franklin County and most of them haven't even seen the lake, said marina manager Chris Bechtler.
“I think everybody's thoughts today is probably, we're having a blast it’s been really fun,” said Hodges.
