ROANOKE, Va. -

Thursday brought endorsements of note for two of the Democrats seeking statewide office.

Former 9th District Congressman Rick Boucher threw his support behind Ralph Northam, the Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor.  And former Governor Doug Wilder endorsed the Democratic candidate for Governor Terry McAuliffe.

In a telephone news conference Thursday morning, Boucher told reporters he believes Northam would be a strong advocate for rural Virginia.  Northam faces Republican E. W. Jackson in the race for Lieutenant Governor.

"He's going to be a champion for rural communities all across Virginia," Boucher said, "and I know that he will be a special friend for southwest Virginia and that's why I'm lending my endorsement to Ralph Northam and his campaign for Lieutenant Governor."

Wilder told the Washington Post he will support McAuliffe over Republican Ken Cuccinelli.  Wilder is a Democrat, but he did not make an endorsement four years ago.
