We've learned a woman from Henry County died after a two-car crash.

It happened Thursday night at the intersection of Route 87 and Almond Street.

State Police tell Your Hometown News Leader that Ellen Compton-Gooding was driving her SUV north on 87 when she ran off the road.  She hit an embankment before rolling over and colliding with a truck stopped at the intersection.

Compton-Gooding died from her injuries a short time later.  Troopers say she wasn't wearing a seat belt.

The Virginia State Police are continuing their investigation into a fatal traffic crash that occurred on Thursday evening around 7:00 p.m. on Route 87 at the intersection with Route 1008 in Henry County.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1991 Ford Explorer which was traveling northbound on Route 87 ran off the right side of the roadway, striking an embankment before rolling over and then striking a 1997 Chevrolet C1500 pick up truck which was stopped at the intersection.

The operator of the Explorer, Ellen E. Compton-Gooding, age 60, of Ridgeway, Va., was transported to Memorial Hospital of Martinsville where she died from her injuries later that evening.

Compton-Gooding was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash.
