The brush fire burning near Speedwell in Wythe County had grown to about 500 acres by Friday morning.  Fire crews reported about 15% containment.

The fire was discovered Tuesday night on National Forest land near Horse Heaven Mountain.  More than 60 firefighters have been working to contain it.  No structures are threatened, according to a spokesman for the U. S. Forest Service.

A community meeting is planned for Friday night.  Forest Service officials will present updated information and take questions from the public.  The meeting is 6:00 Friday night at Speedwell Elementary.

Because of a shift in the wind, smoke from the fire could be detected in the Roanoke Valley Friday morning.
