WYTHE CO., Va. -

The search is on for a Hillsville man who used a knife on a Wythe County Sheriff's deputy while trying to escape.

The call came in just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning that someone was trespassing on property along Rose Hollow Road. That's in the Max Meadows area of Wythe County.

The caller said someone had built a fire. Deputies found four people at that fire. One man ran as they approached.

As Deputy Zack Puckett reached for him, investigators say Cheston Stoneman pulled out a knife and slashed the deputy's hand.

Stoneman then dove into the New River and escaped.

Deputy Puckett has since been released from the hospital.

Stoneman faces several felony charges.

Investigators say he could be armed with a 38-caliber revolver.

PRESS RELEASE FROM WYTHE CO. SHERIFF'S OFFICE:

On April 27, 2014 at approximately 1:40 AM deputies from the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a trespassing complaint located on Rose Hollow Rd in the Max Meadow/Major Grahams area of Wythe Co.  Upon arrival deputies met with the land owner who told them someone was trespassing on his property and had built a fire.  Two deputies went to the area where the fire was and located 4 individuals at the fire.  When the deputies approached them one of the individual fled on foot and was pursued by a deputy.  The deputy caught the fleeing suspect and when he grabbed him the suspect the suspect slashed his hand with a knife causing him to lose his grip.  The suspect then dove into New River and escaped.  The three remaining suspects identified the escaped suspect as Cheston A. Stoneman, age 32, from Hillsville.  Warrants are on file charging Stoneman with Felony Malicious Wounding of a Law Enforcement Officer, Felony Obstruction of Justice, Misd. Resisting Arrest, and Misd.  Contribute to the Delinquency of a Minor.  Stoneman remains at large and is believed to be in possession of .38 caliber revolver.  Also charged are Taylor Stoneman, age 18 of Hillsville and Joy Lawrence, age 31, of Galax.  Both have been charged with Misd. Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor and Misd. Giving a False Report to a Law Enforcement Officer. A 16 yr. old female from Galax was also located at the scene has no charges at this time.  The injured deputy, Zack Puckett, was treated at Wythe County Community Hospital and released.
