It is easy to get caught up in all the trappings of the holiday season, and become a bit materialistic. That is especially true for children.
One way to help children become more gracious is what Blue Ridge Parenting owner Decca Knight calls the "rule of four." That means that each child receives four gifts at Christmas: one thing they want, one thing they need, one thing they wear and one thing they read.
Knight also suggests teaching children about other kids who don't have as much as they have. She says it's a good idea to bring children as young as three along when you donate clothes or toys, so that they can develop more of an appreciation for what they have.
