Police release Wal-Mart surveillance video of 12-year-old Brittany Smith and Jeffrey Easley

Police released the surveillance video from the Wal-Mart in Salem where 12-year-old Brittany Smith and 32-year-old Jeffrey Easley were last seen on Friday, December 3rd.

The hope is someone in line with them or who saw them there can talk about the purchase they made. Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder says they'd also like to talk to any customers that perhaps chatted with Easley or Smith.

When asked about Brittany's demeanor in that surveillance video, the chief said it was hard to determine what kind of state she was in. They also couldn't tell if she tried to signal anyone or ask for help.

Police confirm Easley used his cell phone at the Wal-Mart. They do know who he called but are not releasing that information.

The Chief echoed his prior sentiments of concern. Lavinder says since a week has passed and there have been no sightings, that worries him greatly.

He's hoping this case appearing on the television show "America's Most Wanted" will help bring in more tips.  So far, they've received almost 700.

In addition, the wanted poster will appear in all truck stops across the country. There are also electronic billboards in four states with both of their pictures.

Police had a lead in Florence, Alabama with surveillance video that was thought to be Easley.  But police say it was not him.

The Chief acknowledged there are still a lot of rumors going around, and he took the time to remind people Brittany is only 12 years old. He says the goal is to bring that missing child home and then they will deal with the homicide.

The Roanoke Police Department has a new website you can go to information and to leave tips.  That website it www.findbrittany.com

---------------

Roanoke County Police now say they have received well over 650 tips regarding the disappearance of 12-year-old Brittany Smith.  Authorities say about 50 tips came in over night.  The Center for Missing and Exploited Children has arranged for electronic billboards to display Brittany's picture, beginning Friday in North Carolina and Tennessee.

Roanoke County Police plan to hold a press conference at 3:30 p.m. Friday.  Investigators will update the case at that time.  There's also a chance they will release the actual surveillance video from the Salem Wal-mart.  It was taken last Friday night.  That is the last time Brittany and Jeffrey Easley were last seen.  The two purchased camping equipment.

WDBJ7.com will live stream the news conference.

Authorities in Roanoke County are concerned that nearly a week has gone by and there have been no sightings of 12-year-old Brittany Mae Smith.  More than 500 tips have come in to the investigators' "war room" yet none of them have given police any more leads as to where the child and 32-year-old Jeffrey Easley may be.

Roanoke County police chief Ray Lavinder told reporters Thursday that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children joined  local, state, and federal authorities in the search for the girl.  The missing children's group will immediately post billboards across five states in the effort to find Brittany.
