More than 200 employees at the ITT Exelis Night Vision plant in Roanoke got layoff notices Thursday.
In a statement, a company spokesman said 201 hourly employees are being laid off. Earlier this month, the company said declining government contracts would lead to changes in staffing at the plant. The facility makes night vision equipment.
"We don’t take this action lightly," communications director Jared Adams wrote in a statement, "as every employee at Exelis has dedicated hard work, ingenuity and talent to making the best night vision technology for the U.S. military, international allies, and law enforcement agencies. Every milestone we have reached and success we have celebrated was made possible by our employees’ commitment to their work. It is our full intention to continuing delivering on existing contracts and developing innovative technologies for new markets and future business growth."
