Recovery continues in the Alleghany Highlands.
Dominion Power reported Thursday morning that more than 40 percent of its customers in Alleghany County were still without power.
The situation was much better in Covington where 5 percent were without power, and in Clifton Forge where just 2 percent were still waiting to have their electricity restored.
The county continues to pass out bottled water and ice at a distribution point in Low Moor. The number of people seeking help there has also dwindled in the last 24 hours.
Rusty Howard was helping with the distribution. "We probably unloaded six, seven, eight truckloads of ice and water. It's been a big need."
Residents like Phyllis Lawhorn were grateful. "Without electricity I don't have water either because we're on a well. And I really do appreciate it."
Erin Smith agreed. "I think they're really nice, and I'm glad they're volunteering to help."
Power is also back on at the County Jail in Covington.
More than 75 prisoners were moved to Verona on Wednesday. They will probably return early next week.
