UPDATED: 7 taken to the hospital after head-on crash in Lynchburg

Drivers are asked to avoid the Boonsboro Road area.

Update -- 8:05pm:

Seven people are in the hospital after a head-on crash in Lynchburg - 4 of them are in critical condition.

The wreck happened shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Boonsboro Road.

Milton Brown was driving north when he veered into oncoming traffic.  The 75 year old had a 16 year old passenger in his car with him.  Brown is in stable condition; the passegner is last listed as stable.

The car Brown collided with had 5 people inside, including a 17- and 5-year-old.  The 5 year old was flown to the University of Virginia Hospital in critical condition.  The 17 year old is in stable condition.  The driver has been identified as Kim Hartless of Big Island, and she's in stable condition.  Two other passengers, ages 18 and 39, are also in critical condition.

From Lynchburg police:

On Sunday July 15, 2012, at 1417 hours, members of the Lynchburg Police Department and the Lynchburg Fire and EMS Department responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a 2002 Ford Windstar van and a 2000 Buick Century in the 5100 block of Boonsboro Road.    

The driver of the 2000 Buick has been identified as Milton Brown, 75, of Lynchburg.  Mr. Brown was travelling north on Boonsboro Road when he crossed the double yellow line and the center turn lane into the oncoming south bound traffic lane.

Mr. Brown had a single passenger identified as a 16 year old male.  Both the juvenile male as well as Mr. Brown were transported to Lynchburg General Hospital where Mr. Brown is listed in critical condition and the juvenile passenger is listed in stable condition.

The driver of the 2002 Ford was travelling south on Boonsboro Road when Mr. Brown crossed over into the southbound travel lanes where the crash occurred.  The driver of the Ford has been identified as Kim Hartless, 37, of Big Island, VA.

The passengers inside the Ford van have been identified as John Hartless, 39 of Big Island, Jacob Hartless, 18, of Big Island, a juvenile male, 17, and a juvenile male, 5.

Ms. Hartless is listed in stable condition, John Hartless and Jacob Hartless are listed as in critical condition.  The 17 year old juvenile is listed in stable condition and the 5 year old juvenile is listed in critical condition.

All the patients except for the 5 year old juvenile are at Lynchburg General Hospital.  The 5 year old juvenile was flown to the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, VA.

The Lynchburg Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is continuing its investigation of the crash.  Anyone with any additional information concerning this crash is asked to contact the Lynchburg Police Department Traffic Safety Unit (455-6047) or Central Virginia Crime Stoppers (1-888-798-5900).  All media inquiries should be directed to Captain R.M. A multi-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in Lynchburg sends several people to the hospital.

Emergency dispatchers say it happened along the 5100 block of Boonsboro Road.

A captain with the Lynchburg Fire Department says it looked as if it were a head-on collision, and that a total of 6 people were rushed to the hospital.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area, as officers work on reconstructing the crash.

The Boonsboro Volunteer Fire Department assisted Lynchburg Fire and EMS in this accident.
