The Amherechos show choir at Amherst County High School is singing with heavy hearts, for a member of their group who is no longer with them.
"Brittni loved to sing," said Aimee Burks, a member of the Amherechos. "And she was a really good singer too."
Brittni Coffey, a 17-year-old senior at ACHS, died after crashing her car Sunday on Route 130 near Elon. State Police say she crossed the center line and hit an SUV.
"She was just so sweet, and she had a lot of energy in life," Burks said of Coffey.
Coffey's classmates have spent the last two days dealing with her unexpected death, and the tragic accident that caused it.
"Now I know that I need to be more aware of everything around me," said Burks. "Not getting distracted by the littlest things."
It's a sobering reminder shared by friends, who are gathering at the crash site to reflect.
"She was a smart girl," said Coffey's classmate, Morgan Deel. "She always had a smile on her face and kept everybody happy."
Small memorials are going up around the school to remember Coffey. Her parking space is decorated with flowers and balloons. Classmates are wearing gold ribbons: the color of Coffey's car.
Burks and the Amherechos are preparing to sing at Coffey's funeral.
"For people that didn't have a chance to meet her, I would just say that they missed out on a really good person," Burks said. "I don't know anyone who doesn't like Brittni."
Haywood Hand, the principal at Amherst County High School, tells WDBJ7 that a scholarship is in the works to honor Coffey.
Her funeral will happen later this week.
