Bedford County woman encourages neighbors to "Buy Local" for Christmas

Does $712 sound like a lot?  That's how much you will likely spend on Christmas gifts this year according to a new Gallup poll  So here's a thought.  What if you took all of that money and supported local businesses?

In News7's Hometown Dollars and Sense segment, a Moneta woman is making that her mission and wants you to as well.

It started as one of those email forwards that often end up in your trash without you ever reading it.  Donna Weaver did read this particular email.  She took the simple words and sprung into action.

Weaver is going around her neighborhood, handing out homemade flyers, encouraging others to think local when they're out buying Christmas gifts.

"If there is enough people supporting local businesses maybe the neighbor that's unemployed can get a job if you support locally.  You might be able to get a job here locally," says Weaver.

Most of the businesses she's listed in the flyer offer gift certificates from clothing, crafts, even things for your car.

"I think it's a great idea because there's people that need an oil change and don't have the money," says Kim Garrison-Brown, one of Weaver's neighbors.

So far, many neighbors say they're game for local gift giving this year. Local businesses, bound to be on the receiving end, couldn't be more thrilled.

"Well basically (if we get more customers) it helps with payroll, which helps with the insurance prices.  You name it it's far reaching," says Dave Engel of Moneta Farm and Home Center.

Determined to make a difference, Donna Weaver isn't just talking the talk but walking the walk. Her only hope is that others will join her on her journey.
