ROANOKE, Va.—
Today marks the 125th anniversary for the largest independently-owned department store in the country.
We're talking about Belk!
The retail store in Tanglewood Mall celebrated the anniversary with breakfast and a visit from department executives.
They wanted to acknowledge the commitment the store made to the Roanoke Valley.
One division chairman explains how the retail chain got this far after 125 years.
"We've maintained operating divisions which allows us to stay close to our customers, we continue to evolve all the time,” Division Chairman Bill Roberts said.
All stores will mark the actual anniversary with an event on May 29; the day the first store opened in Monroe, North Carolina in 1888.
