Black Friday records shattered; How did local stores fare?

You've probably heard by now that Black Friday records were smashed from coast to coast but how did our local retailers do? Stores at Valley View Mall in Roanoke report strong sales. Many say their sales continue to break records year after year. While some consider Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving Day to be controversial, many analysts say the decision has paid off.  We spoke with shoppers in Roanoke who helped break last year's record.

We spoke with a local shopper Melissa McCherry. “I'm always excited. I love to shop. I have two children. I'm always out for a good deal. I think coupons are the best--and low prices, low prices,” she said while laughing.

Nationwide, a record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites over the Black Friday weekend, spending $59 billion. That's a 9% increase over last year.
