On Wednesday a home owned by Blacksburg United Methodist Church was checked for energy efficiency by  energy assessment teams.

They depressurized the home and used infrared imaging to find leaks in the house.

Depending on the size of your home, a professional energy assessment like this would cost about $300 to $500.

"It's fairly straightforward and easy to get on the order of 35% savings on your utility bills by doing this work.  It's very cost effective strategy to save money, to save energy and to make your home more comfortable and safer," said Gregg Lewis, Director of Community Alliance for Energy Efficiency.

The Blacksburg United Methodist Church will hold a faith and environment program on Sunday, September 18th.

It includes a tour of that house with the energy assessors.

That kicks off sustainability week in Blacksburg, which runs through September 24th.

There are also lots of easy and free ways to save money in your home and make an impact on the environment.

Try simple things like doing all of your laundry in cold water, turning off the lights when not in a room and taking a quicker shower
