Bomb Squad deems suspicious package left at Virginia Tech not a threat

Alumni Drive at Virginia Tech has reopened after a suspicious package spurred an investigation.

Blacksburg Police say just before 7:00pm Friday, they received a report of a suspicious package left along Alumni Drive, near the Torgersen Hall Bridge.

By about 9:15pm, the Virginia State Police Bomb Squad responded and determined the package was safe. It was removed and the roads reopened just before 10.

BLACKSBURG, Va., Aug. 3, 2012 - At approximately 6:55 p.m. this evening, the Blacksburg Police Department received a report of a suspicious package left along Alumni Drive, near the Torgersen Hall Bridge on the Newman Library side. Blacksburg Police immediately notified Virginia Tech Police and both agencies responded by closing Alumni Mall to vehicular traffic and secured the area as they investigated the nature of the package.
By approximately 9:15 p.m., the Virginia State Police bomb squad responded and determined the package posed no threat to the community. It was removed and area returned to normal activity by 9:45 p.m.
Virginia Tech Police would like to remind all community members of the following:

 *   Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.
 *   Contact the Virginia Tech Police Department immediately to report suspicious packages or objects. Call 540-231-6411 or 911 in an emergency.
