Roanoke's Rescue Mission has a big mission on its hands.  More than a week away from its annual Back to School¿ Blast, the charity needs to collect more than two thousand book bags.  They only have 930 so far.

This year's Back to School Blast has been moved to the Roanoke Civic Center.  It will take place in the Special Events Center Saturday, August 13.  It begins at 9 a.m.

The Back to School Blast provides school supplies to needy families throughout the Roanoke Valley.  The need continues to grow.  Two years ago, the Rescue Mission had 700 turn up for the event.  Last year, it took place at a Carilion parking garage and more than 1,500 showed up.

This year, the Rescue Mission is partnering with Roanoke City Schools so organizers are expecting 3,000 people at the Roanoke Civic Center.

If you would like to donate a book bag, you can drop it off at the Rescue Mission.  It is located at 402 Fourth Street, SE, Roanoke.

Organizers are hopeful they can collect the 2,070 book bags needed.  Organizer Leslie Littlefield told NEWS7 "we want them to go and have their school supplies and their book bags so when they walk into school, they're not feeling like they are missing anything."

If you are planning on attending the Back to School blast, you don't need to pre-register.  However, parents must bring their children to the event.  You no longer have to bring proof of income.

Additionally, kids can get free haircuts and 800 pairs of shoes will also be donated at the event.
