How long would you wait in line for a free sandwich?
Right now more than 100 people are camping out to win a year's supply of chicken sandwiches in Salem, where the Chik-fil-A opens Thursday morning.
Many of them started camping out at 6:00am Wednesday. The parking lot has turned into a tent city of sorts. Inside these tents are some dedicated fans.
"The only way we'd leave here is on a stretcher," said Jake Knupp, who started camping out at 6:00am Wednesday. He plans to be there for 24 hours, until the new fast food chain opens its doors Thursday morning.
"We love Chick-fil-a and we're part of the herd so when they build it we come and as you can see it's a big party," Chik-fil-A fan Scott Spencer said.
The first 100 people will receive 52 coupons for a free chicken sandwich, fries and a drink.
Salem resident Madeline Grochowski brought her entire family, which includes a five-week-old baby. The kids are big fans of Chik-fil-A. The kids like the chicken sandwich and hash browns.
People came prepared to wait. They are passing time by playing games, like rock, paper, scissors, chicken. One boy brought his guitar. Chick-fil-A also had games for the children. The company provided everyone with free meals.
A grand opening like this is a lot of fun, but for some people, they can take it a step farther. For them, it's a hobby. "According to corporate we are number one Chick-fil-A fans in the United States," said Jake Knupp. He and his wife, Libby, proudly showed us their souvenir coupons of every grand opening they've been to. They drove two hours from West Virginia to be here. This is their 89th time at a grand opening.
The Knupps told us they eat Chik-fil-A every day, sometimes two or three times a day. So, these free coupons will come in handy.
Many people told us they plan to share some of the coupons with friends and family.
What's more? There's a special guest camping out with folks. Chick-fil-A's president Dan Cathy flew in from the company's headquarters in Atlanta, to camp out in Salem. He brought his own tent and plans to spend the night in the parking lot like everyone else.
The store opens at 6:00am Thursday.
